Tabula Rasa

If you liked Divergent, The Hunger Games or The Bourne Identity then you need to read this book.  Tabula Rasa is the story of Sarah, a patient in a top secret government hospital where people are sent to have their memories erased, which is really extreme if you think about it, considering the novel is set in present day America.

But then something goes completely wrong during Sarah's "procedure."  The power goes on and off numerous times and during one of the outages someone slips a plastic bag of pills into Sarah's hand.  She has no idea what these pills are for except for the note in the bag that reads:
"TAKE ONE PILL AT A TIME, AT 24-HOUR INTERVALS.
24 HOURS EXACTLY.
REMAIN STILL AFTER TAKING" (p. 26).
Without another thought Sarah takes the first pill and is immediately hit with a memory from her past which knocks her to the floor; where she discovers someone has hid clothes for her and a passcard to open the hospital doors, someone is helping her escape!  Sarah has just enough time to change her clothes before the hospital is rocked by an explosion and mercenaries being firing upon the hospital searching room by room for someone.  It is then that Sarah realizes, "I'm on my own, stranded here, and no one is coming to help me" (p. 40).

Will Sarah escape from the hospital?  Will she be able to survive if she does?  And will she ever get her memories back and figure out her identity?  You will have to read for yourself when Tabula Rasa by Kristen Lippert-Martin comes out next Tuesday, September 23!

Look for We Are the Goldens   coming soon to the library...

"So, Layla, there's something I need to tell you.  Don't be mad.  Please.  Please don't be mad.  I hate it when you're mad at me.  I am only doing this because I love you.  Because our lives are intertwined" (p. 136).

Releasing today is Dana Reinhardt's newest novel We Are the Goldens.  It's a novel about Nell and her older sister Layla who are so close it is almost like they are one person. The story opens with Nell and her friend Felix beginning their first day of high school at City Day, the high school where Layla is already a student and star of the varsity soccer team.  Nell has been looking forward to joining her sister in high school and becoming the only freshman to join the varsity soccer team.  It doesn't seem like long after Nell arrives at City Day that she feels things are changing with Layla, she is becoming more withdrawn and seems disinterested in many of the things Nell is so excited about. Layla has a secret and Nell is determined to find out what is bothering her sister and continue to be her confidante and closest ally.  But this time things are different for Nell, she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her sister's secret.

"While you glared at me.  I felt something shifting.  A fault line springing up.  I stood on one side, and you stood on the other.  I'll probably always remember where I was and what I wore and all that: it was that kind of moment.                         I could no longer pretend.                                       Something was happening.                                     Something that shouldn't be.                                             And I had absolutely no idea what to do." (p. 66-67)

Look for The Here and Now
coming soon to the BRHS Library!

An unforgettable epic romantic thriller about a girl from the future who might be able to save the world . . .

if she lets go of the one thing she’s found to hold on to.

Follow the rules. Remember what happened. Never fall in love.

This is the story of seventeen-year-old Prenna James, who immigrated to New York when she was twelve. Except Prenna didn’t come from a different country. She came from a different time—a future where a mosquito-borne illness has mutated into a pandemic, killing millions and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and the others who escaped to the present day must follow a strict set of rules: never reveal where they’re from, never interfere with history, and never, ever be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna does as she’s told, believing she can help prevent the plague that will one day ravage the earth.

But everything changes when Prenna falls for Ethan Jarves.

From Ann Brashares, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, The Here and Now is thrilling, exhilarating, haunting, and heartbreaking—and a must-read novel of the year.
